Services Provided By the Concrete Pipe Association of Michigan

Education One of CPAM's most critical missions is to ensure that all concrete pipe used in the State of Michigan is properly manufactured, specified, and installed. To achieve this goal we have developed a number of programs and services that are available to our members, the engineering community, contractors, and government agencies. All programs for engineers, contractors and government are available at no cost.

Training Sessions

Rigid and Flexible Pipe Theory & Design

This program outlines the differences between rigid and flexible pipe, and theoretical basis for the design of these two types of pipes. This program is intended to give engineers a basic understanding of the pipe-soil interaction mechanisms and how they affect the design and installation of the pipe.

Loads and Supporting Strengths

This session is a follow up to the Rigid and Flexible Pipe Theory & Design session. In this session, current design methodology and software for concrete pipe are reviewed. This session provides an overview of pipe class selection, bedding type selection and an overview of the current design manuals, guidelines and software available for concrete pipe & manholes. The session includes a review of current ASTM standards for manholes, joint and pipe connection methods, and useful hints and tips on minimum depths, and pipe spacing and alignment.

Open Cut Pipe Installation and Backfill

This session is being developed as training for onsite project representatives and inspectors. The class will include a brief overview of rigid and flexible pipe theory, soil types, pipe bedding and compaction, trench safety, and other requirements for proper pipe installation

Friction Factors for Gravity flow

This session will be developed to provide background for design engineers on Manning's "n" factor for gravity pipes. Included will be information on how Manning's "n" factor is determined, and a review of research and test results on various pipes.

Senior Civil Program

This program is a lecture - discussion for senior civil engineering students, which combines elements of the above sessions into one program. This program has been presented in the past, and is currently being updated and revised.

Other Programs and Services

Support for Concrete Pipe Users

We understand that the pressure on communities and engineers to accept products with lower initial costs and unproven track records can be extensive. CPAM will provide support to municipal officials and consulting engineers who require concrete pipe in their standards and on their projects. We can provide you with technical expertise and documentation to fully justify concrete pipe as your material of choice.

Standards Review

CPAM provides reviews of engineer's standard specification and standard details for pipe work. Our review includes checking references to current national design standards (AASHTO and ASTM) and checks to insure that the materials specified can be built as specified. We will make recommendations that can increase the value to the client, without compromising the integrity of the project.

Pipe Installation Reviews

CPAM and the member companies will provide limited on site inspection of pipe installations. Please note that this service is in no way intended to replace proper onsite observation by a trained project resident. What we provide is a second expert opinion on a contractors installation means and methods.

Hydrogen Sulfide

CPAM has design software available and can assist in determining the potential for hydrogen sulfide generation in sanitary sewers.

Field Investigations

As a part of our member's efforts to continuously improve their products, CPAM wants to know of any problems with new or existing concrete pipelines. We can assist in evaluating existing pipe lines (Including materials other than concrete).
